The five numbers every small business owner should know

Financial confidence is not a personality trait. It is a short list of numbers you check on a schedule. Here are the five that matter most, in plain language.
1. Revenue
Money that came in this period, before expenses. Track it weekly rather than monthly so a slow month does not surprise you on the last day.
2. Gross margin
What is left after the direct cost of delivering your product, as a percentage. A digital product should sit high here. If it does not, the problem is usually pricing, not effort.
Price is not the number you are afraid to raise. It is the number that decides whether the business can breathe.
3. Average order value
Total revenue divided by number of orders. Small, gentle increases, a bundle, a helpful add-on at checkout, move this number without adding traffic.
4. Repeat rate
What share of buyers come back within ninety days. For digital products this is where a list, a journal and a simple follow-up email earn their keep.
5. Cash runway
How many months you could operate with no new sales. Most owners never calculate it, and it is the number that removes panic from your decision-making.
The weekly fifteen minutes
Put these five in one place and review them on the same day each week. You are not looking for perfection, only for a direction. A number that moves is information. A number you avoid is a decision being made for you.
Start with revenue and runway this week. Add one more next month. Clarity compounds faster than you expect.
